{"id":610,"date":"2023-10-10T14:46:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T19:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/treasuresofegypttours.com\/?p=610"},"modified":"2023-10-14T15:06:19","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T20:06:19","slug":"thank-you-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/treasuresofegypttours.com\/?p=610","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Thank you, Canada!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As always, we enjoyed our recent Nile cruise, including an intrepid salesman who braved the fast currents of the Nile River at Esna (because of the High Dam, the river now has a series of locks and dams at Esna).&nbsp;The oarsman pulled up parallel with the boat and the hawker began yelling at the side of the ship:&nbsp;\u201cHello!&nbsp;Ola!&nbsp;Salaam! Bonjour!\u201d Of course, the sundeck was full of tourists watching the ship go through the lock, so everyone looked over the side and I stuck my head out the window of my stateroom.&nbsp;From there, he began tossing merchandise up to the various prospective buyers.&nbsp;This guy should play American professional football \u2013 he has the aim and the arm of &lt;insert the name of any famous NFL quarterback here&gt;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/treasuresofegypttours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nile_ship_merchants_rowboat_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-611\" style=\"width:449px;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treasuresofegypttours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nile_ship_merchants_rowboat_sm.jpg 900w, https:\/\/treasuresofegypttours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nile_ship_merchants_rowboat_sm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/treasuresofegypttours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nile_ship_merchants_rowboat_sm-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/treasuresofegypttours.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Nile_ship_merchants_rowboat_sm-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He catches my eye in between haggling with a group of Chinese tourists on the sundeck and a Russian man two floors down and to my left.&nbsp;\u201cHey, lady, where you from?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I lie and say I\u2019m from Canada.&nbsp;\u201cAh, Canada Dry!\u201d&nbsp;I smile and nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing I get is a plastic sack containing a truly hideous black and orange beach towel with a print of the pyramids embossed on it.&nbsp;I don\u2019t want it, but he insists I keep it. He then tosses up a bag with a lovely printed scarf, and I yell down, \u201cYes to the scarf. More!\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat color you want?&nbsp;You want red?&nbsp;Yellow?&nbsp;You want blue?&nbsp;I make good price for you!\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes, blue \u2013 throw some blue scarves!\u201d&nbsp;Up come some more scarves in assorted colors.&nbsp;I choose what I want and tie them to the railing so he can see what I\u2019ve kept.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHey, lady\u2026 you want tablecloth?\u201d&nbsp;A tablecloth and 12 napkins came sailing into my room.&nbsp; (I swear, this guy is an Egyptian Joe Montana&#8230; actually, better than Joe, since this guy is throwing accurately from a standing position on the prow of a moving rowboat tied to the side of a cruise ship sailing down the raging Nile River.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, I already have a tablecloth.\u201d (As I had just bought a similar tablecloth at Philae Temple, I send the package zipping back down to the rowboat.&nbsp;My aim and my arm are not nearly as good as his, but I somehow manage \u2013 probably with divine intervention \u2013 to hit the rowboat and not the river.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So now I have indicated I intend to keep some merchandise, and he\u2019s ready to haggle.&nbsp;I look surreptitiously at Adel and ask what\u2019s a good price for four scarves.&nbsp;He answers, \u201cTwo hundred Egyptian pounds.\u201d&nbsp;I yell down to the man, \u201cHow much for four scarves?\u201d as I gesture to the scarves I have tied to my balcony railing.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNine hundred pounds! I make good price for you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNine hundred pounds? No!&nbsp;Two hundred pounds!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJoe Montana\u201d affects a look of sheer horror. He is scandalized that I would sully the reputation of his merchandise by offering this pittance, when his scarves are clearly worth four times this amount.&nbsp;But he\u2019s no fool\u2026 he\u2019s got me on a hook, and he\u2019s willing to deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOK, 500 pounds!&nbsp;You believe me\u2026 This is good price!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I look over at Adel. He shakes his head. \u201cToo much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I yell down again.&nbsp;\u201cTwo hundred pounds. No more!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now \u201cJoe Montana\u201d is beating his chest and looking like he will have a heart attack.&nbsp;\u201cI make lower price.&nbsp;Now you must make higher price!&nbsp;I say \u2018500\u2019 and you say again \u2018200\u2019.&nbsp;You believe me.&nbsp;I make you a good price.&nbsp;Four hundred pounds!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Remember\u2026 all this is happening in passable English and he is simultaneously dealing with other buyers in at least two other languages. I swear, I think he\u2019s even conversant in Mandarin.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo hundred!\u201d&nbsp;(I am wavering under the constant pressure of haggling but when I look over, Adel is still shaking his head.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOK, 250!\u201d&nbsp;I look at Adel.&nbsp;He\u2019s nodding.&nbsp;Two hundred and fifty Egyptian pounds is apparently an acceptable price for four scarves, and he whispers, \u201cPut 50 more.&nbsp;This will make him happy.&nbsp;We want him to be happy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I put 300 Egyptian pounds into the cellophane bag with the hideous beach towel and drop it out the window, where \u201cJoe Montana\u201d neatly catches it one-handed.&nbsp;He swiftly counts the money, finds the extra 50 pounds (remember, in 2017, 50 EGP = $3.50), smiles a beatific smile, and bows to me.
